Big Egg Hunt Big Egg Hunt Big Egg Hunt Big Egg Hunt

August 1st 2010

South Creake villagers treated themselves to a day of family fun, food and fraternity on 1st August, when they took over the Playing Field for the day.

The intention was that no one need spend cash, with the exception of the modestly-priced boat race and the purchase of food and drink. Yet, due to the generosity of many of the locals, over £450 was raised in donations towards future South Creake community events.

Rain threatened during the afternoon but was kept at bay through the ancient rain-averting ceremony of erecting the "virtual village hall", an 8 metre by 4 metre marquee purchased this year for the village, using generous donations from BAE Systems and from Morrisons.

A team of volunteers planned the whole day, delivered personal invitations throughout the village and set up and ran the various activities. Villagers who weren't concentrating solely on eating and drinking could participate in:
* Face-painting, applied by Amanda Mendham and Kate Thomson
* A convincing-looking desert island with buried treasure, created by Pete and Glyn Haywood
* Teddy Bears' Picnic with prizes for best-dressed bear, bear with most "karacter" and bear most like its owner, laid on by Jane and David Barker
* Egg and Spoon race, run by Lorna Goodall and David
* Welly Wanging, hugely popular with the more adult villagers and managed by Rod and Janet Skerry
* A hilarious team challenge, put together by Caroline and Roger Harrison, Kate Thomson and Sara Freakley
* A seriously professional-looking goalie challenge, with David Thomson in the hot spot - watch out Canaries!

After prize-giving, with the team challenge contenders scrabbling for space on the straw bale podium, the afternoon finished with the very popular boat race, run by Len Ringwood, Rodney Wakeman and Robin Maslin and nearly decimated by the South Creake ducks, asserting their riparian rights. Music during the afternoon was provided by Jill Smith and friends.

Thanks are due to so many villagers that it would be impossible to list them all and invidious to pick out individuals.
